The Tucson Thunderbirds High School Girl’s Rugby team began in the fall of 2016 to offer girls in Tucson the opportunity to learn and play the sport of rugby. Now in our fourth season, we are looking to jump back into the game for some fun!
Rugby is a wonderful way for high school girls in the Tucson area to get and stay fit, meet new people, experience travel, learn leadership skills, develop friendships that last a lifetime, and even earn scholarships for college. There is a very special culture that surrounds rugby. Everyone is welcome here. We have players from all walks of life with a variety of family backgrounds and interests. As Tucson’s first and only girl’s club side rugby team, the Thunderbirds invite any young woman interested in learning rugby to join us!
One of the most incredible things about rugby is that it doesn’t matter how big or small you are, there is a place for you on the rugby pitch. Even if you’ve never heard of rugby before, you can come out and learn everything while having fun and getting fit! It costs you nothing to come check it out for yourself.
The sport of rugby requires very little in the way of equipment. To participate, you’ll need soccer cleats, rugby shorts, and a mouthguard. We provide the warmups and jersey for our players to wear.
In Arizona, high school girls play the 7s version of rugby. This is because the sport is still growing and as we grow girls rugby in Arizona, our goal is to move to 10s and then standard rugby 15s.
In addition to our club team, there are opportunities for girls to try out for the Arizona Bobcats, our state’s select-side team which travels outside of Arizona for national and international play. We have girls on the Thunderbirds who have tried out and made the team in year’s past. It’s a great way to expand your rugby opportunities and further represent Tucson through this global sport.
Dedication is all you need when playing 7’s rugby with these girls. Come run with us and learn to hit like a girl!
